Allegheny Woodrat

Neotoma magister

 Allegheny woodrats are are between 13-18in (35-46.5 cm) long, half of which is tail, and weigh between 8.1-16.4oz (230-465g). The majority of its body is brownish-grey in color, while the undersides and feet are white. Woodrats have large eyes, naked ears and long vibrissie (whiskers). The most prominent characteristic, which distinguishes it apart from Old World rats, is its tail. The tail of the Allegheny woodrat is completely covered with hairs, approximately one-third of an inch long, (0.8cm) is almost black above and white below. unlike the norway rat, which has 12 mammae, woodrats have just four mammae, which are located between the hind legs.
