Eastern Mud Turtle 

Kinosternon subrubrum

The mud turtle is a small reptile measuring 3-4 inches (7.5-10 cm) in length. The carapace, or upper shell, can be olive, dark brown or almost black. It is patternless, smooth and keelless. Unlike most turtles, It has only 11 marginal scutes rather than the 12. The plastron, or lower shell, is yellow to brown, double-hinged, with 11 plates. Males have a well-developed, blunt spine at the tip of the tail and rough scaly patches on the inside of the hind legs.
